These should be bent down to the horizontal and tied in to a wall or other support. You will probably need to cut them to fit the available space. Try to create a ladder-like pattern of shoots to cover the wall. This will result in flowers over the entire area. If you leave the shoots vertical, you will have flowers only at the top. Water them well but don't stand them in bowls of water as most will simply rot. Instead, place them on a bed of pebbles in larger bowls or trays. Then place the water in the outer container. In this way, the pots will be clear of the water but the atmosphere around the plant will remain moist. Lettuce especially run to seed very quickly at this time of year. You will obtain the best results by re-sowing with cos or crisp varieties. The seed of butterhead or 'smooth' lettuces doesn't germinate well in hot weather. Give all vegetables a top-up feed of suitable fertiliser and use a hoe during hot weather to keep down weeds. Usually seen against a high wall, it can be grown free-standing in sheltered positions in many parts of the country. The huge glossy leaves act as a foil for the enormous white flowers which are now opening a few at a time and will continue for many weeks. The best varieties are 'Goliath' and 'Exmouth' which flower at a young age. Free time 570 Ornamental tips >>> Switched On 540 Cookery 580 TV 600 G's World CookBook FilmQuiz Main Menu
