Australia The All Ordinaries Index rose to a new peak of 762.), up one point, after an erratic half-day session. BHP eased 15c and ERA 4c. CS$ edged up 9c. Hong Kong The Hang Sing Index finished 3.74 points ahead at 867.30, as prices closed steady on holiday book squaring. Singapore The STE rose 2.77 to 987.61.  More

Most issues stayed put at overnight levels; while those to move generally followed a lower course. Of the FT 30, only Distillers (2p ahead at 236pR, Imps (up 1p at 141p) and Tate & Lyle (up 3p at 378p) advanced. Gilts, on the other hand, drew enough support from the November trade figures to post gains ranging between an eighth and three-eighths.  More

Oils were quietly mixed; though news of an Egyptian price cut left Shell, for example, off 4p at 556p. International Paint came back from suspension at 203p, up 46p, following the agreed Courtaulds terms (Page 122). Eagle Star, too, was active, falling 8p to 709p before picking up late in the half-day session to close unchanged at 717p, pending further bid developments.  More
