Tests on rats showed the statin drugs prompt growth cells to build new bone, University of Texas researchers then checked the records of osteoporosis petients and found those taking the drug did have better bone density. The team carrying out the study said the discovery came out of the blue. Home news digest and in brief.... 141 News Index 102 Flash 150 Regional 160 A-Z Index Headlines East News Main menu

Intel, the world's largest computer chip maker, said it found the bug in a small percentage of its chips. "If a system is powered all the way down and is turned back on, it may not re-boot until you turn it off and on again," an Intel spokesman said. The problem will be eliminated in the next manufacturing cycle, Intel said. Home news digest and in brief.... 141 News Index 102 Flash 150 Regional 160 A-Z Index Headlines East News Main menu

It also raises hopes of new treatments for heart diseases and schizophrenia. The initiative has been made jointly by Cambridge's Sanger Centre, Japan's Keio University and laboratories in the US. It is an historic first for the Human Genome Project, which plans to sequence all genes in human DNA — more than 10,000 — within the next three years. Purdue University in Indiana warned that the "Trojan gene" affected the laws of nature when the GM fish tested by it grew too large, too quickly. The GM fish became sexually mature faster than normal fish and upset the ecosystem by producing more eggs. British-based biologists are thought to be experimenting with GM salmon.
