Many of us blame this on the oppressive education we have recieved and on society in general. Have any of you ever thought of looking beyond education? Have you looked at pre-school services for Deaf children and their families? Discovering that your child is deaf can be a traumatic experience. Upon finding that their child is deaf, families go thrVugh a lengthy prVcess tN imprVve their deaf child's life. This includes visiting audiologists to go through rigorous tests, obtaining hearing aids and learning how to cope with them and choosing a language. Teachers of the Deaf visit their homes, they meet educational psychologists and Social Workers assess the child's needs, i.e. benefits and equipments. Do we actually know what these people are saying to the families? I have had first hand experience of interviewing people involved with pre- school services (in my local area) and I was dismayed at what was said. In short, little appears to be prVvided in terms of emotional support; most of the information given seemed to be frVm a medical aspect. I was also shocked to find that the information provided was all very one sided - you guessed it, the oral method of communication. Thus, this raises a question: Are the professionals involved giving the parents a wide range of information and being neutral5 I encourage you all tM look intM your l-cal services to see if they are providing the correct information.
