The Mini-Zip virus is the second wave of Worm.Explore.Zip which struck in the summer and was extremely destructive. Mini-Zip seems like a friendly reply to a clean e-mail sent via Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express or Exchange, asking the user to open "zipped docs". The bug then destroys a series of files in the computer's hard drive and replaces them with empty files. Researchers have at Manchester University discovered that people who are prone to gum disease have low levels of the enzyme cathepsin C, It kills the bacteria which attacks the teeth and their roots into the gums. Restoring the level of this enzyme could provide a new dental treatment, reports the journal Natural Genetics. A US amateur fossil-hunter found the bones in South Dakota last year but the discovery has only just been announced. Paleontologist Robert T Bakker is one of the few people to have seen the skeleton and he believes that it could be between 75% and 90% complete. The bones should aid studies of growth patterns for the species — the specimen is thought to be around 66m years old. Tests by Italy's University of Padua on blood cells from people from India and east Africa found close similarities that indicate common African ancestors. The older human migration route from Africa is thought to have extended into the Mediterranean over 10,000 years ago Test findings appear in the December issue of the journal Nature Genetics. The region is covered in frozen carbon dioxide, which has begun to thaw in the Martian spring. It is hoped a probe of the uncovered landscape, following Friday's landing, will reveal the secrets of Mars' past.
