Lieutenant Colonel Mike Gallagher said about 40 Iraqis had deserted to Saudi Arabia since the war started. They were mostly low-ranking, enlisted men but also a couple of junior officers. He said their primary reason for deserting was low morale and a lack of food. He added "apparently their living conditions are quite appalling".
