Brigadier General Pat Stevens said Saudi troops, with US marine helicopter support, had cleared Khafji of Iraqis. Fighting was now continuing to the north of the town, eight miles inside Saudi Arabia, he said. A total of 160 Iraqi prisoners of war were taken in the fighting, which had not been a major invasion he said. The number of Iraqi soldiers killed would not be made public, he added. 101 War headlines 130 Gulf military Next News GulfIndex Headlines Newsreel

Saudi soldiers had fought against the Iraqi army, with US air power which destroyed 22 Iraqi tanks, he said. No US ground troops had been involved in recapturing it, he explained. Eleven US marines were killed and two wounded in fighting on Wednesday, he said. Two US soldiers - one a woman - were missing, but had not been involved in the fighting, added the Brigadier. 101 War headlines 130 Gulf military Next News GulfIndex Headlines Newsreel

Brigadier General Pat Stevens said military convoys from Baghdad to Basra were being attacked, with "just too many burning vehicles to count". In the Persian Gulf itself Allied air and naval attacks had now sunk or damaged 60 Iraqi vessels, he said. Some 37 mines had also been destroyed in the waterway, said Brigadier General Stevens. 101 War headlines 130 Gulf military Next News GulfIndex Headlines Newsreel
