Lieutenant Colonel Dick White said it was difficult to get a clear picture, but the vehicles appeared to be moving in columns and in small groups. American aircraft fired rockets at the craft, which was armed with Exocet missiles, and it went down. Defence Secretary Tom King told MPs in the Commons that they would undertake missions against targets in Iraq and Kuwait with conventional munitions. They are being based at RAF Fairford due to a shortage of airfield space nearer the Gulf. Brigadier General Pat Stevens said Saudi troops, with US marine helicoptersupport, had cleared Khafji of Iraqis. Fighting was now continuing to the north of the town, eight miles inside Saudi Arabia, he said. A total of 160 Iraqi prisoners of war were taken in the fighting, which had not been a major invasion he said.
