Baernard Weatherill, who became Speaker in 1983, has been Conservative MP for Croydon North-East since 1964. His first post in the Tory party was as Whip in 1967, rising to become Deputy Chief Whip under Ted Heath in 1973. Mrs Thatcher left him out of her first Cabinet but named him Deputy Speaker. He had presided "with distinction, fairness and impartiality...and looked after the interests of backbenchers on both sides", said Mr MacGregor. Shadow Commons leader John Cunningham paid tribute to a "long and honourable career as an MP and as Speaker".
