Baernard Weatherill, who became Speakerin 1983, has been Conservative MP for Croydon North-East since 1964. His first post in the Tory party was asWhip in 1967, rising to become Deputy Chief Whip under Ted Heath in 1973. Mrs Thatcher left him out of her first Cabinet but named him Deputy Speaker.
