P385 CEEFAX 385 Thu 7 Mar 21:49/59 1/4 ON THE US GP The 1991 Formula One season kicks off at Phoenix, a street track which has undergone many changes since last year.It has been much criticised for its many 90-degree corners and a number of thesj have now been altered to increaselap speeds and make the circuit more interesting for spectators and drivers.Phoenix is now 2.28 miles long and lap speeds are already being predicted to be considerably quicker this weekend. The new track, improved cars and tyres will see lap times come down by up to fivj seconds. 383-84 John Watson's team guide Next Page Headlines M/Sport Racing
P385 CEEFAX 385 Thu 7 Mar 21:49/11 2/4 ON THE US GP Wj are in the third season of normally- aspirated GP cars and the difference in horsjpower between the Hondas and the rest has narrowed considerably. This should mean fierce competition at the front from round one and closely- fought battles throughout the field. In my opinion there are currently five teams capable of winning GPs regularly - McLaren, Ferrari, Williams, Benetton and Tyrrell. Victories are going to be much harder to come by than before. Tyres could provide that vital edge andit will be crucial to see what Pirelli and Goodyear produce for their teams. Next Page Headlines M/Sport Racing
P385 CEEFAX 385 Thu 7 Mar 21:45/11 3/4 ON THE US GP 1991 sees a number of changes in the Formula One rules, with one of the most significant affecting the points systemAll 16 races will now count towards thedrivers' standings rather than the best11 as in the past. This will cause somecompetitors to reappraise their tacticsThe odd 'off' or attack of brain-fade may not have mattered too much before but, with the Championship likely to bevery tight, drivers may be a lot more reluctant to attempt risky manoeuvres. Gone are the complex calculations. The winner will be the driver with the mostpoints at the end of the final race. 5,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Next Page Headlines M/Sport Racing
P385 CEEFAX 385 Thu 7 Mar 21:57/34 4/4 ON THE US GP Much more severe penalties will be enforced than ever before for bad, inconsjderate or dangerous driving. Thesj will vary from a stop-go penalty to exclusion from the rest of the race and will be imposed immediately. I would have liked to see one person controlling driver discipline at all evjnts, rather than a committee of three stewards as suggested. I believe the drivers would rather be dealt with by someone who understands the situations which arise during GP racing rather than faceless stewards who may never have sat in a F1 car.
