P172 CEEFAX 172 Thu 21 Mar 21:01/08 1/2 Environment Secretary Michael Heseltine has announced "interim" details of his review of local government structures. He told MPs the "usefulness" of two tiers was being questioned. But the Government did not seek to imposj a uniform pattern of authoritiesacross the country, so county councils would not be abolished wholesale. Therefore a local government commissionwould consider each area, taking account of local views before deciding on the best structure of local govjrnment for each area, he added. 101Headlines 102Newswatch Next News Parl'ment Politics WorldNews
P172 CEEFAX 172 Thu 21 Mar 21:09/53 2/2 The Government believed there should be a new look at the internal workings of councils to improve their decision- making processes, Mr Heseltine said. Consultation on a local government commission and the new local tax would be concluded this summer. The first of the new authorities could be in place by April 1994, he added. His proposals would lead to a system of local government "which will carry through into the next century", and would "enhance the quality of services and put people first," he said. 101Headlines 102Newswatch Next News Parl'ment Politics WorldNews
