Made during the build up to the 1989 elections, the first free vote since General Pinochet overthrew the Allende government in 1973, it is a remarkable testament to the strength of a people. It is always careful, however, to look with a clear eye at the horrors of the past and the problems of the present, as well as the hopes of the future.  1/4 Next Feature Back-Up Sports What's New

One speaker, for example, suggests in all honesty that Pinochet had been unaware of the wave of torture and murder carried out in his name, an argument used by some for Hitler. Another speaks, more ambiguously, of Pinochet as "a man who achieved great things and committed grave errors," an eerie echo of the idea that at least Mussolini made the trains run on time.  2/4 Next Feature Back-Up Sports What's New

But the idea of massive trials of army personnel for their crimes under his regime is seen as dangerous during the difficult transition to democracy - to find out the truth is, for some, enough Pinochet makes clear what will happen should the new Government attempt to touch "my people" in a chilling TV threat - a threat to heed from the man who will be army commander until 1997.  3/4 Next Feature Back-Up Sports What's New

But there is much in Racz's film to give hope, as he constantly intercuts political campaigning - which is remarkably free of animosity - with the vitality of the Chilean people. Aylwin's victory in the elections is seen as a wise choice of a man who is sincere and willing to learn from the past as he takes on what he calls a "hard but beautiful task."
