My research shows that anorexia is caused by dieting. Studies on men show that all you have to do is lower the calorific intake and, over weeks, they start to have disorded thinking, become passive, emotional and start to binge and purge, doing things which are thought of as essentially feminine. All the years of being told to diet have created it. I know because I had anorexia and I'm not crazy. Women are really good at blaming themselves. Why did you sit down and write it? Many people talk about these things but as long as they conclude it's just feminine psychology, you're left with the dispiriting conclusion that women are just dumb to be obsessed. It occured to me that, in literature, beauty is part of a power struggle. Then I realised the same thing was going on all around me. Once you see things women are doing to themselves as things that are done TO THEM, you get angry!
