Those earning more than £70,000 benefited by an average of £31,690 a year since 1979, compared with £170 a year for those earning less than £5,000, said Mrs Margaret Beckett, shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Those earning between £60,000 and £70,000 were an average of £10,110 a year to the good. Only Abbey shares may be held in the PEP. The minimum investment is 600 shares or a combination of cash and shares to a value of £1,200. Thereafter, monthly contributions of £50 may be made, or lump sums of at least £250. It's a Personal Equity Plan, to be managed by Standard Life, Europe's largest mutual life insurance company. The new unit trust is called Global Advantage. It has initial charges of 5% and annual management fees of 1.5%. Anyone who had invested in an averagely performing UK unit trust since last August would have seen the value of £100 dwindle to £81, according to Micropal. (See page 637/5). But the Halifax reckon that following the falls in the market, shares are now cheap.
