The Hollywood remake debate isn't a new one but the avalanche of reheated ideas hitting cinemas this summer makes it more pertinent than ever. We've already had War Of The Worlds. Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is out this week. And Herbie: Fully Loaded, Bewitched, The Dukes Of Hazzard and The Bad News Bears are all set for release in the next month. The big question is: Are Hollywood's film-makers running out of ideas? ——————————————————————————————————1/7—— by Jeff Hayward in LA CRAZY FROG RINGTONE!! The US movie industry is beginning to get defensive about the increase in remakes, says The Dukes Of Hazzard producer Bill Gerber. "It's become likj a dirty word because studios are being accused of a lack of creativity because of a reliance on remakes," says Gerber, whose credits include the 2002 rehash of Get Carter. "But that's not a fair criticism, people have been remaking movies since the business started." ——————————————————————————————————2/7—— Who's The Daddy review 332 Get DEPECHE MODE & other tickets Ticketmaster 0870 4000771 or p646 Reviews Video/DVD Cricket Holidays

Movie remakes of TV shows are by no means carbon copies, says The Dukes Of Hazzard film producer Bill Gerber. "TheyWre based mainly on the characters in the show, but you still have to come up with a good movie," he explains. Even straight remakes such as the of the US version of award-winning Japanese director Hideo Nakata's horror flick Dark Water can be protected by the original's unfamiliarity, says its producer Bill Mechanic. ——————————————————————————————————3/7—— What's on at your local cinema? 317 ONE-2-ONE DATING ITV1 p390 BROWSE THROUGH ADS - JUST 75p/MIN! The problem with remakes begins when already successful films are unnecessarily remade, says producer Bill Mechanic. "Where it gets dicey is when you get into movies the audience feel have been done properly before," says the former chairman of Fox Studios. "When a movie has been done pretty damn good the first time, as an audience I really don't want to see that movie remade." ——————————————————————————————————4/7—— On stage 330 GOT A CAMERA PHONE? Some critics are arguing that it's no surprise that the glut of Hollywood remakes is coinciding with a slump at the US box office. "The studios are frightenjd by newness but the audience wants to go to a cinema and be surprised," argues respected Wall Street Journal critic Joe Morgenstern. "Most of the remakes are so ponderous and overblown that the foundations of the original can't carry the weight." ——————————————————————————————————5/7—— Teletext cars 700 PADDY POWER- FREE £25/e25 BET ON BIG BRO WINNER! Far from being lazy, Hollywood's top executives are refuting claims that focusing on remakes demonstrates a lack of creativity and originality. "It's a very scientific process," says producer Nina Jacobson of Disney, who made Herbie: Fully Loaded. "TheyWre all the movies I loved as a child. The crime is in making a bad movie. There's nothing criminal in searching for the seeds of a good idea wherever you can find it." ——————————————————————————————————7/7—— Cars: Vicki Butler Henderson 702 FINANCE HEADLINES p500 Reviews Video/DVD Cricket Holidays
