There was nothing token about Norma Waterson when she lost by a single vote to Pulp in 1996 or her daughter Eliza Carthy who came close with Anglicana a couple of years ago or Talvin Singh, who won in 1999 with OK. Seb Rochford moved to London from Aberdeen in 1998 and had several abortive attempts to get a band together until he met sax player Pete Wareham and things started falling into place and they formed a collective. It's been such a strong year for poppy melodies and good old-fashioned guitars you'd imagine the supposed 'specialist' albums won't get a look-in at this year's Mercuries - especially with great albums by M.I.A and Antony & The Johnsons to contend with.
