"The most common problems are around jealousies and discipline of the children," relationships expert Denise Knowles says. Problems are likely to arise if a step- parent appears to be taking the place of a biological parent. "It can put an enormous strain on their relationship," she says. "Often, the new parent has got to know their partner without the children around. It examines what happens when step-brothers and sisters fall in love. "I certainly know of it happening," says Relate counsellor Denise Knowles. "Their parents get hung up on this more than anyone else.
