Will its bid succeed? It's a trick that works well in continental Europe as cost-conscious large saloon drivers go smaller without missing out on quality. In the UK perhaps only VW's Golf-based Bora has shifted enough bums on to its seats to make the idea a runner. Priced at just a little more than the equivalent Focus hatch, four-doors start at £14,970, up to £17,975. Petrol engines offered are Ford's latest 113bhp 1.6 Ti-VCT and a 143bhp 2.0 plant. It describes the result as a "classic limousine body", and it certainly outstrips the MK1 Focus four-door. Passengers in the back have class- leading head, shoulder, leg and knee room. Split back seats can be flipped down to boost limited luggage space. A branded Sony stereo, metallic centre console detail, instruments and chunky- rimmed steering wheel, soft-touch fascia and silicon-damped hinges all smack of executive class investment. Whether all that will be enough to overcome the general apathy of British buyers towards such small saloons is another thing. Probably not. Yet that doesn't stop this from being a very competent car with the odd dash of excellence in places.
