That's exactly what happens in The Nightmares Next Door, a psychological experiment to see if bad neighbours can be turned into good ones. The isolated, purpose-built village is a fully controlled environment, and the man pulling the strings is psychologist Dr George Erdos. "It's not something you can walk away from," he says. "We are very attached to our houses - an Englishman's home is his castle. "If somebody is a nuisance neighbour, it is very difficult to stomach because it is day in, day out. The groups are real-life pests, and fairly typical according to Dr George Erdos. "They are more representative rather than extreme cases," he says. "I wanted to bring them on to one site, surround them with troublesome neighbours and force them to stick it out," he says of Nightmares Next Door. "It's the tit-for-tat argument," he says. "If you do a good turn for your neighbour, it is likely that eventually the good deed would be returned. That's why he wanted to create a sense of community amongst the Nightmares Next Door households. "It encourages a feeling of interdependence," he says. "In our own neighbourhoods, no matter how self-contained we are, we are interdependent.
