P119 ORACLE 119 Sun22 Dec ITV 1914:42  1/13  ONE DEAD, THREE HURT  IN BELFAST BAR ATTACK One man was killed and three other people, including a boy of seven, were injured when a gunman opened fire in a bar in south-west Belfast. After the attack on the Catholic Devenish Arms in Finaghy Road North the boy was in a "critical" condition. Four people had earlier been shot rs d in a 24-hour wave of revenge killings. A Catholic man was murdered in his Belfast home, two Protestant men were shot dead in a nearby bar and a teenage student was killed in Moy, County Tyrone. P119 ORACLE 119 Sun22 Dec ITV 1938:13  2/13  STOP MURDERS, BISHOP  URGES KILLERS A leading Protestant Bishop in Ulster has begged paramiliatary groups to stop their campaigns of sectarian killings. The Rt Rev Samuel Poyntz was speaking after the fourth killing in 12 hours. People in the province should "reach out to neighbours and live peacefully," he said in an ITN interview. "There is no way in which the Church could or would have any dealing whatsoever" in such a scheme. He suffered physical beatings and mock executions during his captivity. P119 ORACLE 119 Sun22 Dec ITV 1955:01  4/13  HARD CORE DRINK-  DRIVERS UNDER FIRE Police hit out at selfish drink-drivers as they disclosed 1,714 motorists in England and Wales were found over the limit in the past three days. The Association of Chief Police Officers said:"It is regretful that the number of motorists tested positively is virtually the same as last year." The number of breath tests conducted was 19,993, down 27.8% on the 27,758 over the same period last year. P119 ORACLE 119 Sun22 Dec ITV 1936:48  5/13  'WRONG LANE' PRINCESS  BREATH TESTED Princess Michael of Kent has been breathalysed after being spotted driving in a bus lane near Kensington Palace, Scotland Yard has confirmed. The Princess, who is believed to be the first member of the Royal Family to be breathalysed, was given a verbal warning after the test proved negative. She is thought to have been driving her husband's Bentley in a lane meant for buses, taxis, coaches and motorcyles. The Princess insisted she was treated like everyone else and gave a negative test. P119 ORACLE 119 Sun22 Dec ITV 1940:28   6/13  FIVE KILLED IN  FRENCH, SWISS ALPS Avalanches in the French Alps, set off by heavy snow falls,killed three people and injured two others and in the Swiss Alps two people died under a mudslide. The avalanches swept into holiday residences near the Savoie ski station of La Plagne. Two people died in one chalet and another in an apartment. In Orsieres, Switzerland, the mudslide triggered by heavy rain buried a house with the victims inside. Road and rail traffic was affected in several areas. P119 ORACLE 119 Sun22 Dec ITV 1904:40  7/13  26 KILLED IN VINTAGE  PLANE CRASH A vintage DC-3 aircraft with 30 people on board crashed near Heidelberg in Germany, killing 26 of them. Four survivors were taken to Heidelberg University Clinic. State radio said two were seriously injured. The plane, usually chartered by groups for sight-seeing tours, took off from Frankfurt and crashed in a forest, police said. Operators Classic Wings said there had been no radio contact with the DC-3 before the crash, indicating that it must have happened suddenly. Engineers are working to move 50 tonnes of clay which blocked the Manchester to Sheffield railway at Edale. Sheffield station is closed by flooding but the A628 at Saltersbrook is now open after a bridge partly collapsed. The Mersey is said to be dropping after bursting its banks in south Manchester. But the White House stopped short of recognising any of the 11 republics that make it up. P119 ORACLE 119 Sun22 Dec ITV 1905:30  10/13  TEN KILLED IN  GEORGIA 'COUP BID' Opposition forces seeking to oust President Zviad Gamsakhurdia shelled Georgia's government HQ and at least 10 people were reported killed. A health ministry spokesman told local journalists at least 10 people died and 50 were wounded in a day of fighting. "The figure is not final," he said as ambulances raced through the Soviet republic's captial, Tbilisi. The president's spokesman said opposition national guardsman attacked the government HQ early in the morning and were attempting a coup d'etat. Transport Minister Moshe Katzav said in Jerusalem that Israel hoped subsequent talks would take place nearer to home, preferably in the Middle East. He said: "Unfortunately the Arab side rejects our proposals in this matter". But he hoped that in Washington they would be able to convince the Arabs that it would be more efficient to negotiate in the region, or even in Europe. John Shippey's body was found by firemen called to a blazing car at Mertsham, Surrey on Wednesday night. Mr Shippey, from Igtham, Kent, who was separated from his wife, had been stabbed in the chest.
