P161 Teletext 161 Jan26 22:12:42———————————————— ——————————————————ROOM TO LIVE - PLACES FOR PEOPLE Attractive, spacious, high density living is possible in our towns and cities, without building on valued open spaces. This is the message of the Council for the Protection of Rural England's new publication, Room To Live. The hard-hitting report lays the "town cramming" myth to rest and establishes an agenda for action to make more of urban space for living. ——————————————————————————————————————— by Bernadette Carroll GREEN SCENE INDEX p160
P161 Teletext 161 Jan26 22:27:22———————————————— ——————————————————ROOM TO LIVE - PLACES FOR PEOPLE Towns and cities have been losing people and jobs for decades - every week 1,700 people leave major English cities for the countryside. "As people go, so does urban life and prosperity," according to Henry Oliver, planning officer for the Council for the Protection of Rural England. "Shops close, jobs dwindle, commuter traffic increases, and public transport struggles to survive." ——————————————————————————————————————— Check out the green kitchen 164TOTAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE p400
P161 Teletext 161 Jan26 22:28:20———————————————— ——————————————————ROOM TO LIVE - PLACES FOR PEOPLE As more people opt to live in the countryside, social exclusion and environmental decay results, says Henry Oliver from the Council for the Protection of Rural England. "To break this cycle of decline we need to harness new development and housing to improve our towns and cities. "It can be done," he insists. "The space is there, it's just a simple case of planning." ——————————————————————————————————————— Green TV today and tomorrow 165GET READY FOR THE YEAR 2000? p106
P161 Teletext 161 Jan26 22:18:41———————————————— ——————————————————ROOM TO LIVE - PLACES FOR PEOPLE Graffiti, crime, litter and miles from work or the shops - that's the classic tower block image. "But, too often we mistake poverty, neglect and bad management for over- crowding," says expert Henry Oliver. "Far from being crammed, these high- rise estates were often built at lower densities than our prized Georgian streets and squares. We need to see higher densities as opportunities." ——————————————————————————————————————— Check out the green kitchen 164IT'S YOUR LIFE INDEX p410
P161 Teletext 161 Jan26 22:11:01———————————————— ——————————————————ROOM TO LIVE - PLACES FOR PEOPLE Like tower blocks, today's suburban estates often create endless cul-de-sac mazes with no sense of place, says planning expert Henry Oliver. "They house too few people, not too many," he claims. "Low density housing wastes land, lacks life, supports few services and forces pjople into their cars. We need to address how we can bring life to these soulless suburbs too." ——————————————————————————————————————— Green projects you can take on 165 FULL TV LISTINGS p110
P161 Teletext 161 Jan26 22:11:22———————————————— ——————————————————ROOM TO LIVE - PLACES FOR PEOPLE Attracting people back into towns and cities means more than simply providing homes, says Henry Oliver of the Council for the Protection of Rural England. "Urban living needs spaces where we can go to relax and hear ourselves think. We need to make room for allotments and parks where wildlife thrives. "All of these factors will encourage people to stay in our towns, which in turn will protect our countryside." ——————————————————————————————————6/7——Check out the green kitchen 164DON'T GET BAMBOOZLED! p152

A spokeswoman for the Department of the Environment said: "Sixty per cent of this growth projection will be built on derelict urban land. "We have also set up an Urban Renaissance Task Force, which is looking at better uses of urban land." ——————————————————————————————————7/7—— e-mail: greenscene@teletext.co.uk WRITE TO: GREEN SCENE, PO BOX 297, LONDON SW6 1XT.
