According to UK vets, eight out of 10 cats and dogs in that age bracket need dental treatment. Dog breath, sadly, is the least of their worries. Dental disease is the commonest illness affecting pets in Britain. Worse still, the bacteria can spread, causing kidney and heart problems. ——————————————————————————————————2/6— TV winner: Janet Critchlow from Staffs LATEST FILM REVIEWS p463 C4 Dr Roy Recipe Lovestars TV Plus

Bob is the director of Pet Smile Month, a campaign aimed at raising awareness of tooth problems in pets. So how do we take care of our canine's canines? Is it simply a case of nipping down to the local supermarket for a toothbrush, or does Fido require more specialised equipment? ——————————————————————————————————3/6— TV winner: Janet Critchlow from Staffs WIN THE HISTORY OF SCOTLAND p413 Dr Roy Recipe Lovestars TV Plus

But no dog will enjoy an unexpected toothbrush shoved in the mouth, so Bob suggests you start off gently with a kitchen cloth and build up to brushing. Human toothpastes are no good at all to pets - they taste bad and they can be dangerous. Luckily, there are special meat-flavoured toothpastes for animals. ——————————————————————————————————4/6— TV winner: Janet Critchlow from Staffs MILLENNIUM COUNTDOWN! p105 C4 Dr Roy Recipe Lovestars TV Plus

Vet Bob Partridge says it can be done, but there is an easier alternative - special cat chews are now available which, if eaten daily, have the same effect as brushing three times a week. "The main problem with the chews is the cats get addicted to them," Bob explains, "and then they always try to get them out of the cupboard." ——————————————————————————————————5/6— Win the history of Scotland 413 CLUB 140 COOL FOR TEENS p140 C4

Vet Bob Partridge suggests the simplest solution is a diet of hay. It is abrasive and rabbits enjoy it. The big question for Bob is: Will tooth care solve Butch's doggy breath? "If you can stop him eating horse manure," he says. ——————————————————————————————————6/6— Pet Smile Month info: 01423 858 161 LATEST TV GOSSIP p110 ITV
