The agreement was reached after hour1 of talks at a United Nations conference held in Johannesburg, paving the way for an international convention. It will ban or severely restrict use of the chemicals, classed as Persistent Organic Pollutants (Pops). The chemicals have been linked to cancer, birth defects amd sterility. P154 CEEFAX 2 154 Sun 10 Dec 21:13/33       2/5 ENDEAVOUR SHUTTLE COMPLETES ITS MISSION The space shuttle Endeavour has left the International Space Station (ISS) after successfully installing a huge solar power system. Endeavour's astronauts fitted the giant wings during three spacewalks declared a great success by Nasa controllers. After completing the spacewalks, the astronauts visited the crew inside the space station. Endeavour is due back at Kennedy Space Centre in Florida on Monday evening. P154 CEEFAX 2 154 Sun 10 Dec 21:05/40       3/5 BRAZIL TAKES ITS PLACE IN SPACE RACE Brazil's space research agency Inpe said it successfully launched its Sonda rocket from the Rio Grande state. The rocket was launched to a height of 430km where it released its cargo, a suborbital station to monitor gravity. The launch was twice delayed because of technical glitches. The suborbital station fell to earth 400km off the Rio Grande coastline. The station is to be returned to the Barreira do Inferno launch centre. The government is trying to bring information technology to the people by letting them withdraw cash from state pensions for computers. Under the plan, the nation's largest car maker will develop human robots for nursing care and other uses. Toyota, which already has robots on its production lines, hopes to be selling the machines by 2005. Sony and Honda have already both unvjiled prototype robots that walk.
