P272 CEEFAX 2 272 Sun 10 Dec 21:11/28       THE AGE ALLOWANCE 2/2 People aged 65 or over at the staru of the tax year qualify for higher allowances so long as "total income" does not exceed £17,000 in the year to 5 April 2001 (£16,800 in 1999/00). Total income includes all income (except tax-free income) less certain tax-deductible payments. If total income exceeds £17,000, then the age allowance is scaled down by £1 for every £2 of income until it rjaches the amount of the basic personal allowance. So if in 2000/01 you earn £19,810 and you're aged 65-74 you will onl8 get the basic personal allowance (if your are 75+ the figure is £20,330).
