Emma Thompson plays the sensible older sister who has her hands full trying to rein in her wilful sibling Marianne. Thompson's script won an Oscar, while Kate Winslet proves exactly why she went on to bigger and better things. Unmissable stuff, beautifully directed by Ang Lee with a splendid cast. Finney is a disillusioned, retiring headmaster whose marriage to Greta Scacchi is gradually falling apart. But his life changes when he recieves an unexpected boost from a pupil. Finnjy is great as a man who is falling out of step with the times, although he's no match for Michael Redgrave, whg played the role in the 1951 version.
