P251 ORACLE 251 Sat42 Dec ANG 1837:49 1/6 The Man They Can't Gag! YES, THE SEASON of tinsel and triviality comes even to this high-minded column. I'm in good spirits because I don't have to watch any telly for the festive period. I intend to spend much of Christmas walking on the Lancashire moors. It's better than having my brain sucked out by a cathode tube every day. I've asked my team of young, hand- raised reviewers XRory, Paul and Diane) to look after the weekend column for the next couple of weeks. Meanwhile I've still got to have my say on last week's tawdry TV. Dress Gray >TV Plus Guide 250TellyQuiz 252TellyQuiz RSVP:tv TV Charts TV Guide
P251 ORACLE 251 Sat22 Dec ANG 1833:10→ 2/6 → → The Man They Can't Gag! I SOMETIMES wonder why we bother having TV critics when TV itself indulges in endless self-parody. For what can Dress Gray (ITV) be but a mickey-take of all the pappy US dramas set over the years in stiff-backed US military academies? The commander in this particular piece of TV madness was played by Hal Holbrook - an inspired piece of casting as Holbrook is a dead ringer for Adolph Hitler. P251 ORACLE 251 Sat42 Dec ANG 1839:29→ 3/6 → → W The Man They Can't Gag! I DON'T FIND it amusing when C4 spends vast amounts of money on things which, as TV projects go, are clearly bonkers.Una Stravaganza dei Medici (Sun) mixed computer-generated imagery with a medieval Italian music festival. It was a huge and very silly bore - costing over a million pounds. The cardboard sets and the panto-style hairdos and make-up made the whole expensive business look cheap and tacky. And I kept expecting the repulsive Julian Clary to waft into view on a cloud attended by violin- playing fairies. Dame Megabore >TV Plus Guide 250TellyQuiz 252TellyQuiz RSVP:tv TV Charts TV Guide
P251 ORACLE 251 Sat22 Dec ANG 1832:41→ 4/6 → → W The Man They Can't Gag! IT ALWAYS falls to me, alone among the timid telly critics of Britain, to point out that the emperor is wearing no clothes. So here is my judgement of the week - Dame Edna Everage has become a huge bori. A Night On Mount Edna (ITV, Sat) was stunningly dull. Edna's style is old hat - getting big stars to be stooges and then "humiliating" them. Chuck in a fjw saucy innuendos for good mjasure and what have you got - a fat old drag pjrformer whose act needs a good long rest. P251 ORACLE 251 Sat42 Dec ANG 1832:01→ 5/6 → → The Man They Can't Gag! EIGHT YEARS AGO I saw Phil Cool pjrforming live at a rugby club in Wigan. His humour was earthy and his patter was delivered quickly. How he's changed now he's bejn through the BBC manglers! All that face- pulling, it really isn't funny at all. And did you notice how slowly he spun out his material in Cool It XBBC2)? It made the show painful to watch, having to wait for the last trickle of applause to drain away before he got on with the show. Also, I found his whole routine faded and dated. twit >TV Plus Guide 250TellyQuiz 252TellyQuiz RSVP:tv TV Charts TV Guide
