The FT-SE 100-share index, which had been jittery after yesterday's plunge, dipped nearly 40 points on hearing of the surprise $10.8bn US trade gap. It later recovered partially in a see- sawing market to finish the day with a fall of nearly 28 points. One London dealer said the market was dogged by nervousness which would take some time to work its way out of the system.
