P119 ORACLE 119 Tue24 Oct ITV 1946:02 1/13 TRADE FIGURES SHOW £1.64bn DEFICIT Britain's balance of payments deficit for September was £1.64bn — in line with what the City had been expecting. The deficit on manufactured goods — the visible trade deficit — was £1.94bn, against £2.3bn in August. The current account deficit was down from August's shock £2bn figure.Another deficit like that would have exerted more pressure on sharep and sterling. As it was both share prices and the pound fell in the general trough of despondency caused by the figures and a gloomy CBI survey (see p114).
