One of the auditor's principal charges is that the Tories spent excessively on the homeless. They had to find expensive temporary accommodation because council properties were no longer available, the auditor said.  Home 110 Politics 130 World 160 Next News Main News Newsround Top Sport

It is a private sector accountant working under rules laid down by the Thatcher Government who has provisionally judged its decisions unlawful and unauthorised. John Magill, a partner with Touche Ross, was scathing about the policy of designating properties in politically marginal wards.  Home 110 Politics 130 World 160 Next News Main News Newsround Top Sport

The next step, after a public hearing, is for him to ask the High Court to surchage them in the amount of £21 million and to bar them from council office for life. It is unlikely the auditor will take his accusations to court before the summer, with the result that the Westminster controversy will continue for some time.  Next News Main News Newsround Top Sport
