There was no hint in the speech that the Iraqi leader was willing to comply with UN Security Council resolutions, said Mr Major. Unless the UN resolutions were obeyed in full, "there will be a land conflict," Mr Major predicted. Mr Aziz was taken by car straight to the Kremvin where he met Pre idvne Gorbachev. The two then began discussions in private. Following the meeting Mr Gorbachev's spokesman, Vitaly Ignatenko, is to give a press conference. But Brigadier General Richard Neal told a briefing in Riyadh that no permanent bases had been established on enemy territory. "It's a continuation of our active campaign of aggressive patrolling and reconnaissance efforts," he said. The Royal Artillery has deployed all of its guns in an Allied bombardment across a large area of the Iraqi front line. They have been firing at positions in Iraq up to 12 or more miles beyond the border in a "co-ordinated fire plan" with all the Allied forces. The movj follows a similar one by neighbouring republic Slovenia yesterday to assert its independence from the central Belgrade government. The largest republic, Serbia, wants to keep the 45-year-old federation intact. One of the world's greatest dancers, for many years she was prima ballerina of the Sadlers Wells and Royal Ballet companies. Dame Margot, born Margaret Hookham, was the Royal Ballet's only dancer to win the title "prima ballerina assoluta". Ms Fonteyn was married to Roberto Arias, a Panamanian politician who was paralysed by an assassination attempt in 1964. He said that neither dissolution nor isolation of the Soviet Union would be in the interests of the West. "All the peoples of the Soviet Union should enjoy the right to self- determination," Mr Hurd told the Great Britain-USSR Association. British military spokesman Colonel Barry Stevens said the 7th Armoured Brigade had used 72 guns and 12 multi- launch rocket systems during the raids. He said the aim was to hit Iraqi tanks, artillery, command and control sites, logistical sites and troop morale. A BBC correspondent said UK artillery fired at positions in Iraq up to 12 miles beyond the border. Brigadier General Richard Neal told a military briefing in Riyadh that 14 more troops surrendered and a quantity of surveillance documents was found. Among those taken prisoner yesterday was an infantry battalion commander and his staff, he said. In today's assault, a number of weapons were recovjred, Brig Gen Neal said. Group Captain Niall Irving said the planes had been successful in cratering and paralysing airfields. RAF Jaguars had destroyed two and damaged two more Iraqi multi-rocket launchers, he said at a briefing. Royal Navy minesweepers have located and neutralised several mines in Gulf waters, he said. Colonel Ahmed al-Robayan told a briefing in Riyadh that 2,400 Allied sorties were flown during the past 24 hours - some 88,000 in total. About 1,355 Iraqi prisoners of war were now in Saudi custody, not including those captured by US forces yesterday. A military spokesman says one Scud was intercepted by a Patriot, while the other broke up in flight. It is not thought there have been any injuries or damage.
