Much less of an achievement than his Do The Right Thing, it is also way behind Bird or Round Midnight as a jazz movie. Denzel Washington plays a trumpeter torn between his career and his girl. As Washington plays him, Bleek is an arrogant loudmouth, not unlike Lee who plays his old buddy and manager. Lee's directorial style impresses when he is in the club or on the street but the story has rather eluded him. All horror films have a plausibility problem that good directors overcome by various sleights of hand and a creation of atmosphere. But here's a flabby film about a psychiatric patient told by his shrink (David Cronenberg, the horror director) that he's a serial killer who has been reducing Calgary's population. Then there is a hoary old legend to lay to rest, ending in the usual round of monsters and gore. If you know the ending, the movie fails to thrill or surprise and Alan Pakula's direction is very static, lacking any real emotional peaks. Harrison Ford is the district attorney accused of murdering a glam colleague and former lover. Bonny Bedelia is his jealous wife, Raul Julia his smooth lawyer and Greta Scacchi the victim. Not as good as Jagged Edge, let alone Anatomy of a Murder, it is very intelligent and also very dull. It's based on the autobiographies of NZ writer Janet Frame and chronicles the life of this eccentric woman who overcame hardship and years in mental institutions (she was wrongly diagnosed as schizophrenic) to become a writer. This antipodean My Left Foot is utterly absorbing and uplifting, and played to perfection by Alexia Keogh (seven), Karen Ferguson (aged 15) and Kerry Fox.
