P624 ORACLE 624 Sun30 Sep C4 2351:04CYRANO DE BERGERAC Greenwich Theatre 081-858 7755 French satirist and dramatist Cyrano was the basis of many romantic legends, of which the best known is Edmond Rostand's colourful and poetic play. Only heroic swordsman and poet Cyrano's love for Roxane is greater than his huge nose. But she adores the beautiful Christian, enamoured by the eloquent love letters Cyrano has composed and sent on Christian's behalf Edward Petherbridge's tormented Cyrano commands the play, matched only by the booming Jemma Redgrave as passionate Roxane. **** (Frances Humphreys) Reviews Index 620 West End Guide 625PARK AVENUE THE SOAP OPERA p126 ITV W End Plays Videos Bookworld Beat Box
P624 ORACLE 624 Sun30 Sep C4 2354:36FENCES Garrick, WC2 071-379 6107 Black, burly garbage man Troy Maxson was once a baseball player whose career was curtailed when the game's apartheid ended and white leagues took only young black players, leaving veterans, like Troy, to make another living. Still carrying his grudge, he tries to protect his family from the prejudice he has known but simply builds barriers that separate him from his kin as much as from the world beyond his backyard. August Wilson's heartrending play draws stunning performances from Yaphet Kotto as powerful, pathetic Troy and Adrian Lester as the son alienated by his dad's aggressive stance **** J.EllistonReviews Index 620 West End Guide 625W End Plays Videos Bookworld Beat Box
P624 ORACLE 624 Sun30 Sep C4 2352:11MOSCOW GOLD Barbican 071-638 8891 Well, what did you expect? Naturally, to Howard Brenton and Tariq Ali Mikhail Gorbachev is a hero, rescuing Marxism/ Leninism from both the dead hand of the Politburo and the dangerous populism of Boris Yeltsin. As a piece of theatre, this is a cheerful hotchpotch. Borrowing from sources as various as Brecht, Chekhov and the Prudential ad, it tells the glasnost story from a distinctly partisan point of view. But the script is full of sharp flashes of wit (tho' the German joke went right by 98% of the audience) and it's a very entertaining evening. **** S.Hennessy >Reviews Index 620 West End 625W End Plays Videos Bookworld Beat Box
P624 ORACLE 624 Sun30 Sep C4 2358:45INTO THE WOODS Phoenix,WC2 071-867 1044 Lapine's libretto adds to the familiar stories of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk et al, the quest of the baker and wife to undo a curse of barreness. The tales become a dreamlike rites of passage as each character selfishly pursues their wish in Act One and then discovers the dangers of so doing in Act Two: no escapist happy ending here. Sondheim's witty lyrics and melodic score (memorable is the wolf seducing his lunch Red Riding Hood) is delivered slickly by an outstanding cast, led by Julia McKenzie's ugly witch. A sluggish Act Two but still a refreshingly different musical. **** Sandy Fordham >Reviews Index 620 West End Guide 625W End Plays Videos Bookworld Beat Box
P624 ORACLE 624 Sun30 Sep C4 2353:19KEN DODD: HOW TICKLED I AM London Palladium 071-437 7373 Like cats with cream they lap him up. But whether the cream in your saucer curdles or not will depend on how much this multi-talented comedian tickles your fancy. Last year's brush with the tax man has given him a whole new repertoire of jokes and very funny they are too. Ken Dodd's energetic show is a sight to behold. Supported by singers, dancers, an illusionist and the Diddymen, it's an action-packed evening of comedy and song. His style might be a bit dated for some (like his suits!) but he's a warm and beguiling host. **** D.CollinsReviews Index 620 West End 625W End Plays Videos Bookworld Beat Box
