The weathered face, relaxed charm and distinctive voice have been put to good use on a cover version of Phil Collins' slushy, heartfelt tear-jerker. With his smooth, soulful vocals, Steve has at least managed the easy task of making it better than the original. A good arrangement adds in some gospel backing, but keeps that distinct thump of drums. Should do well, but comes too late to makj a bid for Christmas No 1. —————————— by Michael Osborn —————————— Music 530 TV Index 520 Films 540 Singles Charts The Vibe Gigs

Cat Stevens originally made it a hit, then it was Boyzone. The former boy band singer now picks up the baton with Stevens — now known as Yusuf Islam. The reworked song is a heartfelt effort and less cheesy than the Boyzone cover. Yusuf's vocals are earthy and mature, while Ronan yelps his way through it. This was an early front-runner for the festive number one, but the Band Aid 20 phenomenon now makes this unlilkely. —————————— by Michael Osborn —————————— Music 530 TV Index 520 Films 540 Singles Charts The Vibe Gigs

With a rootsy bass, the odd parp of brass and some tuneful vocals, this effectively makes its mark — but with remarkably little fuss or noise. MANIC STREET PREACHERS — EMPTY SOULS The Welsh rockers follow up their opening hit from Lifeblood with a new tune which has more energy, verve and strength than the first. But the lyrical content is predictably earnest and has precious little to usher in the Voy and silliness that is Christmas. —————————— by Michael Osborn —————————— Games 550 Children 570 Soaps 525 Music 530 TV Index 520 Films 540 Singles Charts The Vibe Gigs
