Not because the end result was especially poor but because it so comprehensively failed to update the flawed original into something better. (XBOX)  The game's basic range of gameplay options is distressingly similar to the 8-bit original. For all the loving rendered cerulean seas and island paradises most of your actual strategic choices are managed through the same sort of static menu screens as the original. (XBOX)  The game clearly wants to be a sort of role-playing arcade adventure - a cross between Monkey Island and Elite. Alas though the interaction with governors and other characters is extremely limited and there's little to distinguish one island from another. (XBOX)  Controlling your ship in combat is actually rather fun. It's far too fast paced to be realistic but it still seems to have a basis in reality and there's plenty of nuance to the controls and your tactics. Which is the opposite of the dreadful sword fighting techniques whose semi- scripted sequences have more in common with a dancing game than a beat 'em-up. (XBOX)  Incredibly the same dreadful control system used for sword fighting is also used for dancing: an unfortunately necessary skill if you are to woo a suitably impressive trophy wife. These sections also manage to suffer from some frightful slowdown. Sid Meier, in case you were wondering, is the egghead behind Civilization. (XBOX)  With its shallow RPG elements and half- broken arcade sections it's a wonder that Pirates! is as much fun as it is. The changes in the Xbox version are minor, with the most important being a more obvious, linear, mission path through the game and a few alterations to the mini-games, most notably the one for sneaking into an enemy town.
