WPSA says abandoned and ill-treated pets pose the single biggest challenge to animal welfare groups. The Society is producing a song to launch the initiative in March - members say Pet Respect will be their most important campaign since the launch of Libearty, the campaign for bears, in 1992. P723 CEEFAX 723 Thu 13 Jan 21:11/10 UK TEAM SELECTED FOR PARALYMPICS The British Paralympic team has been selected for the next Paralympic Winter Games in Norway from March 10-20 1994. The team of 25 skiers, skaters and ice hockey players includes leg amputees, wheelchair users, blind and partially sighted competitors. P723 CEEFAX 723 Thu 13 Jan 21:12/17 CAMPAIGNERS URGE CURB ON TANKERS The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds has called for action to control the transport and disposal of oil at sea. The UK Government has already joined the Chamber of Shipping to recommend "voluntary no-go" areas to reduce the risk of pollution in sensitive wildlife areas. P723 CEEFAX 723 Thu 13 Jan 21:43/42 GENE FOUND FOR TUBEROUS SCLEROSIS Doctors have identified a gene that causes the genetic disorder tuberous sclerosis. The discovery could soon lead to the introduction of an accurate test for the condition, which often eludes diagnosis due to its varied symptoms and signs. Tuberous sclerosis can lead to epilepsy, learning difficulties, kidney problems, rashes and (mostly benign) tumours - it affects between 6-10,000 people in the UK.
