Shareware

Shareware, a stalwart of early computing, is an infinite chest of intrigue for many retro computing enthusiast.

Many of us as younger humans probably experienced buying one of those 100/1000/10000 title CD-ROMs from the local discounter, exploring its "treasures" and probably coming away a little disappointed with the results.

No different for myself, and I have begun the process of sharing various shareware titles on the Internet Archive. Some have in-browser emulation enabled, but many are a little to new for that - so you'll have to download them to experience their full glory.

This page acts as an almost index page for my work so far, not only for my own sanity, but as a way you can quickly see what I've covered.

What is Shareware?

Shareware is a type of software distribution model where the software is typically provided for free, but with some limitations or restrictions. Users are allowed to try the software for a limited time or with limited features, after which they are required to pay for the full version to continue using it. Shareware is often distributed via the internet or through physical media such as CDs or DVDs, and is typically marketed as a way for users to "try before they buy". Shareware is different from freeware, which is software that is completely free to use and distribute without any restrictions or limitations.

The items below may include the occassional item of freeware that is being marketed as shareware. This index can also include demoware, which is a type of software that is similar to shareware in that it is distributed with the intention of allowing users to try it before they buy it. However, demoware typically has more limitations than shareware, often limiting functionality, features, or time of use more severely. Demoware is often used as a marketing tool by software developers to generate interest and promote their software to potential customers. Unlike shareware, demoware is typically provided free of charge and is intended to be used as a marketing tool to entice users to purchase the full version of the software.
