The scheme is being piloted in schools south of Birmingham this year and, if successful, will be extended next year. "The cost has certainly put me off in the past, but when it's strictly necessary it's a cost you have to bear. But the cheaper the better," she says. "I've always sent my son to school with a hat in hot weather.
