WeWre barely a month into 1999, and already she's got a successful new series and two films under her belt. The ice-cool star of The Rector's Wife and Shooting The Past is, in real-life, a warm, sunny woman. She's had a few disasters - the critics panned A Year In Provence - but Lindsay has a habit of coming out on top. ——————————————————————————————————1/6—— By Rachel Jolley NOW IT'S EVEN EASIER TO FIND LOVE: TELETEXT DATING ITV p390 Pets Dr Roy Recipe TV Plus

Playwright Harold Pinter just can't get enough of her cool, aloof presence - he cast her in two of his plays last year. Ashes To Ashes went on to a theatre in New York, and Lindsay got to take her hubby and seven-year-old son along too. ——————————————————————————————————2/6—— Staying safe in the sun 411 WIN A PORTABLE TV p415

She confesses she was stunned by the script and took the role immediately. Lindsay plays a museum curator who turns sleuth when her livelihood comes under threat from an American magnate. "It's hugely relevant to the 20th Century," she enthuses, "and it's always easier when it's good." ——————————————————————————————————3/6—— A cure for doggy breath 415 WHAT'S IN YOUR LOVE STARS? p418

"I had two very loving parents against a complicated backdrop," is all she will say. She first found fame on the stage, playing the calculating Marquise de Merteuil in Les Liaisons Dangereuses, opposite Alan Rickman. One of her most famous admirers is Paul Newman, who sent her a case of champagne when he saw her in Liaisons. ——————————————————————————————————4/6—— We talk to Linus Roache 412 WHAT'S IN YOUR LOVE STARS? p418

Her advice for the budding costume drama star: "Corsets hurt everywhere." She took a more modern role as the wife of Al Pacino in the 1996 film City Hall but most of her scenes were slashed from the final cut. She wasn't keen on the final result. Her cut-glass accent prompted one producer to claim she was too posh for a role. She recalls being teased for her accent as a child: "I must have been coming home from school, and I heard them say: 'Oh, here comes the Queen'." Now, of course, that voice is her trademark. Shooting The Past is a hit, and she's shooting right to the top. ——————————————————————————————————6/6— Doctor Roy on cosmetic surgery 416 BIG SCREEN NEWS AND GOSSIP p461 C4
