The convoy of twenty vehicles began its journey soon after an official at the US State Department announced Iraq had released between 800 and 2,000 Kuwaiti detainees into Red Cross care. Earlier today, Iraqi and Allied military representatives agreed to the exchange of all PoWs and civilian prisoners held by both sides. P198 CEEFAX 198 Thu 7 Mar 21:51/48   TWO MISSING JOURNALISTS  RETURNED TO US ARMY 3/22 Two CBS journalists missing inside Iraq have been returned safely to territory controlled by US troops, the Pentagon has announced. The two, Chris Everson and Pete Williams, were among a group of 40 Western journalists listed by the US Defence Department as missing in Iraq. They were returned to US troops in southern Iraq safe and well, said a US military spokesman. Mohammed Hussein al-Tajer of the Islamic Action Organisation said Iraqi army units were preparing to suppress a popular uprising against the president. Meanwhile a Kurdish opposition official has claimed 34 Iraqi army officers and several regiments have surrendered to Kurdish rebels in northern Iraq. P198 CEEFAX 198 Thu 7 Mar 21:01/18   BRITISH TROOPS WILL START  RETURNING ON SATURDAY 5/22 British troops in the Gulf will start to return home this weekend, the Prime Minister has announced. Speaking in the Commons, Mr Major said the first to come back would be medical reservists from Glasgow. The Desert Rats - 7th Armoured Brigade - would begin to leave early next week. Marlin Fitzwater said he was sure zhe Mr Bush would become directly involved in peace efforts "if appropriate". Meanwhile, US Secretary of State James Baker is duj to have talks on the future of the Middle East with Israeli and Arab leaders this weekend. The Society says a special commission should be set up to advisj the Lord Chancellor on the selection of judges. It says modjrn appointment methods such as tests and interviews should be used instead of secret recommendations made by senior legal figures. The official news agency said the army would be controlling access to the port where thousands boarded freighters bound for Italy. Italian authorities have said they will send back most of the 12,000 Albanians, some of whom have been allowed to land - others are still on board the ships. Kenneth Kgase said that after Mrs Mandela whipped and punched him and three other young men, her bodyguard Jerry Richardson made them clean their own blood off the walls. Mr Kgase, who has been described by the defence as a "publicity seeker", said Mr Richardson had forced him to take part in an attempted murder. Counsel for five of the six, Michael Mansfield, said the evidence suggested that those West Midlands officers had been "less than honest". He said new analysis of police notes and statements showed some had been "manufactured" and others "altered". This would incorporate the existing Western European alliance, Nato. Speaking in London, Mr Delors said the Gulf crisis had proved the EC lacked the institutional machinery and military force which might have allowed it to act as a community. P198 CEEFAX 198 Thu 7 Mar 21:34/21   ROCHDALE "ABUSE" CHILDREN  ALLOWED HOME 12/22 Ten children in the Rochdale ritual abuse affair have been allowed to go home by a Manchester High Court judge. But Mr Justice Douglas Brown ruled that four other children still in care would not yet be returned to their parents. The children had told of witches and of killing babies and animals. The judge said they probably imagined such things after watching horror films on video. He strongly criticised the "lamentable" actions of social workers. He confirmed a ruling by a children's panel on Wednesday that the children, now in care with foster parents in mainland Scotland, should remain under place of safety orders for 21 days. Lawyers for the parents are demanding access to tapes of interviews with the children. Accounts from refugees crossing into Kuwait support reports that an anti- Saddam rebellion in the city has been quashed. Yesterday, US military intelligence reports indicated that resistance from Iraqi opposition forces had been overcome by government troops. Iraqi opposition groups based in Iran are claiming victory for their forces, saying it is not true the Republican Guard has infiltrated the city. The Supreme Assembly for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq said rebels were tightening control over Basra and eight other Iraqi cities and towns. A spokesman for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan said that 34 officers and "several regiments" from the Iraqi 24th Division surrendered near Ranya. The spokesman said that the Iraqis had been surrounded by PUK fighters. Tehran initially rebuffed the force, of mainly Syrian and Egyptian troops, on the grounds that Iran was being left out of regional security matters. The Iranian delegation comprises Vice President Hassan Habibi and Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati. A Japanese foreign ministry official said Douglas Hurd had rung Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Nakayama, to congratulate the Japanese government on winning approval for the aid. Mr Hurd had also asked that Britain receivj a share of the war funds. A Foreign Office spokesman said that minister of state Douglas Hogg had met a delegation which broadly represented the main opposition groups. He was expected to restate Britain's position on Iraq, calling for no change to frontiers, no dismemberment of Iraq and no Allied occupying force.
