Mohammed Abdul Baqi, former managing director of a former BCCI client, Attock Oil, has pleaded not guilty to charges of furnishing false information and conspiracy. Beverley Tumelty, 28, needed treatment for burns when the airbag was activated after her Ford Mondeo collided with another vehicle. But Ford says the airbag had worked normally and there was no evidence of burning or scorching on the bag or elsewhere in the car. Cardinal Basil Hume has urged public consultation over what is deemed to be acceptable practice. Armed police, a helicopter and ambulances were on stand-by at the house in Durrington near Amesbury, while police negotiated with the man. His mo her was wi h him during the three-hour siege and was finally able to get the gun away from him. The deputy governor of the Moorland institution at Doncaster said he would offer the cash incentives in return for well-kept cell blocks. The Prison Officers Association has condemned the move. Mr Justice May rejected defence pleas that key figures in the international drugs plot were given only 14 years in the Netherlands. Auditor John Magill said he would ask the High Court to order those involved, including Dame Shirley Porter and Barry Legg, now an MP, to pay back the £21 million lost. Mr Magill said the council's house sales policy was unlawful and unauthorised. His report supported allegations that council houses were sold to gain electoral advantage. "My provisional view is the council was engaged in gerrymandering" through the sale of council houses, he said. A solicitor acting for Dame Shirley Porter said she rejected the findings of the report - both in fact and in law. A Gallup survey for tomorrow's Daily Telegraph shows Labour on 46.5%. More than 1,000 people were interviewed across Britain between Thursday last week, 24 hours after environment minister Tim Yeo's resignation, and Tuesday. Even some moderate deputies have objected to the treaty, announced by President Clinton and President Kravchuk earlier this week. Prominent lawmakers said they had not been told about the agreement, and accused Mr Kravchuk of fanning confrontation with parliament. The UN said the truce had cut fighting in war-torn areas to the lowest level in two years. The ceasefire in the breakaway Krajina region was due to end on Saturday, but the new deal is set to last until the end of January. Bosnia's UN ambassador said his government was considering the move in the wake of the renewed threat by Nato to use air strikes. He refused to name those countries likely to be subject to a boycott. Witnesses had claimed Grams was executed by two policemen of the GSG-9 anti-terrorist unit after being "neutralised" at the Bad Kleinen railway station on 27 June. The Iranian news agency Irna said two small bombs, placed in a rubbish bin, exploded near Ferdowsi Square. Nearby shops were also damaged in the blast. Tehran has in the past accused the exiled mujahedin Khalq opposition group of such attacks.
